We've learned to grab power, demand recognition, and climb higher until everyone has to look up to see us. But Jesus completely redefines what greatness looks like. He doesn't ask us to balance success with humility or to be humble while still pursuing worldly greatness. Instead, He reveals something revolutionary: greatness and servanthood aren't two different things we juggle... they're the exact same thing seen from different angles. This means the person washing dishes in the church kitchen with a heart full of love is demonstrating the same greatness as Jesus washing His disciples' feet. The parent sacrificing sleep to care for a sick child, the friend who listens without judgment, the coworker who helps without being asked... these are the moments when true greatness shines. In God's economy, greatness multiplies when it's given away. The more we serve, the more significant we become... not in the world's eyes, but in the way that actually matters.

Bible Verse
'The greatest among you must be a servant.' - Matthew 23:11

Reflection Question
How can you redefine success in your daily life to align more with Jesus' definition of greatness?

Quote
Jesus collapses that distinction entirely. Social media feeds are filled with highlight reels, and success is measured by how many people look up to us. Yet Jesus presents a completely different way of living that challenges everything our culture teaches us about greatness. In God's kingdom, the rules are flipped upside down. The way up is actually down. True greatness isn't found in accumulating power or demanding recognition, but in something our world considers weakness: serving others. This isn't just a nice idea... it's the fundamental operating principle of God's kingdom. This paradox feels uncomfortable because it goes against the natural instincts of our sin nature. We want to be seen, valued, and respected. But Jesus invites us into a different kind of life, one where we find our identity not in what we achieve, but in how we love and serve. When we embrace this upside-down way of living, we discover something remarkable: the very thing we were chasing through self-promotion - true significance and lasting impact... comes naturally through humble service.

Bible Verse
'But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.' - Matthew 23:12

Reflection Question
What areas of your life are you trying to climb higher in, and how might God be calling you to embrace a different approach?

Quote
The way up is down. Using James 4:10 and Matthew 23:11-12 as foundational texts, Jonathan contrasts worldly definitions of greatness (wealth, power, recognition) with God's kingdom logic where greatness equals servanthood. The message examines how Jesus embodied this paradox by coming as a servant king, and challenges believers to reject the culture of self-promotion in favor of biblical humility. Jonathan emphasizes that humility isn't thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less, and calls for intentional acts of service without seeking recognition.

Intro Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts, ready to learn from Your Word. We live in a world that constantly tells us to promote ourselves and seek recognition, but Your kingdom operates on different principles. As we gather today, open our hearts and minds to understand Your truth, even when it challenges our natural thinking. Help us to be receptive to what You want to teach us through this time together. Give us the courage to examine our own lives and see where we might be seeking our own glory instead of Yours. Holy Spirit, guide our discussion and help us grow closer to You and to each other. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Ice Breaker

What's one skill or talent you have that most people don't know about, and how did you discover it?

Key Verses

- James 4:10
- Matthew 23:11-12
- Matthew 20:26-28
- Proverbs 16:18
- Philippians 2:3-11
- James 4:6

Questions

- How does our culture's definition of greatness differ from what Jesus teaches in Matthew 23:11-12? Can you think of specific examples?
- Jonathan mentioned that 'greatness and servanthood are not two different things that you balance - greatness IS servanthood.' How does this challenge your understanding of success?
- What are some ways that social media and modern culture encourage self-promotion? How can we navigate these platforms while maintaining biblical humility?
- Jesus said 'those who exalt themselves will be humbled.' Why do you think pride is inherently unstable, and what examples have you seen of this principle in action?
- The sermon distinguished between 'thinking less of yourself' versus 'thinking of yourself less.' What's the difference, and why is this distinction important?
- How did Jesus demonstrate this paradox of humble greatness throughout His life and ministry? What specific examples come to mind?
- What are some practical ways we can 'humble ourselves before the Lord' in our daily lives without it becoming performative or fake?
- Jonathan challenged us to find one way to serve without seeking recognition this week. What barriers or fears might prevent us from doing this, and how can we overcome them?

Life Application

This week, identify one specific way you can humble yourself and serve others without seeking recognition or credit. This could be helping a coworker, serving your family, volunteering in your community, or meeting a need you've noticed. Do this act of service with a genuinely humble heart, focusing on blessing others rather than how it might benefit you. Pay attention to how God meets you in these moments of humble service and notice any changes in your heart or perspective.

Key Takeaways

- True greatness in God's kingdom is defined by servanthood, not self-promotion or worldly success
- The paradox 'the way down is up' means that humbling ourselves before God leads to Him lifting us up in honor
- Pride is inherently unstable and leads to a fall, while humility creates lasting, genuine influence and respect
- Biblical humility means thinking of yourself less, not thinking less of yourself… it's accurate self-knowledge in light of God's grace
- Jesus perfectly demonstrated this paradox by giving up His divine privileges to serve as our sacrifice, resulting in Him ultimately being lifted up in honor

Ending Prayer

Father, thank You for this time together and for the truth of Your Word that challenges and transforms us. We confess that humility doesn't come naturally to us… we often want recognition and credit for what we do. Help us to have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had, choosing to serve others above ourselves. This week, as we look for opportunities to humble ourselves and serve without seeking recognition, meet us in those sacred moments. Show us what true greatness looks like through Your eyes. Transform our hearts to desire Your approval above human applause. Help us to trust You with the outcomes as we seek to live out this upside-down kingdom logic. Draw us closer to You as we learn to walk in humility and service. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.

These three words acknowledge that your life is no longer your own, and surprisingly, that's where true freedom begins. When you declare Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you receive the greatest gift ever offered... salvation. This isn't something you can earn through good behavior or deserve through religious activity. It's a gift, purchased by Jesus' death and resurrection. The price was His life; the benefit is yours forever. When you receive this gift, you become part of God's family, with all the rights and privileges that come with being His child. Salvation means you're no longer defined by your past mistakes, your current struggles, or your future fears. You're defined by what Jesus has done for you. You have a new identity, a new purpose, and a new destiny. The same resurrection power that raised Jesus from the dead now lives in you. If you've never made this declaration, today could be the day your life changes forever. If you have, let this truth fill you with gratitude and confidence. You belong to the One who conquered death, and nothing can separate you from His love.

Bible Verse
If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. - Romans 10:9-10

Reflection Question
Have you personally declared Jesus as Lord of your life, and if so, how does this truth impact the way you see yourself and your future?

Quote
This isn't something you earn. But Jesus changed everything. When He conquered death, He didn't just win a personal victory... He secured victory for everyone who believes in Him. This victory transforms how we face every struggle in life. That financial crisis you're worried about? Death doesn't have the final say... Jesus does. That health diagnosis that's keeping you awake at night? Death doesn't have the final say... Jesus does. That broken relationship or shattered dream? Death doesn't have the final say... Jesus does. This doesn't mean life will be easy or that problems will disappear. It means that no matter what you're facing, it's not the end of your story. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in your life, bringing hope where there was despair, healing where there was brokenness, and life where there seemed to be only death. When you truly grasp that Jesus has already conquered whatever you're facing, it changes everything. Fear loses its grip. Anxiety loses its power. Hope becomes unshakeable because it's rooted in the One who has already won the ultimate victory.

Bible Verse
But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died. So you see, just as death came into the world through a man, now the resurrection from the dead has begun through another man. Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life. - 1 Corinthians 15:20-22

Reflection Question
What struggle in your life feels overwhelming right now, and how does knowing that Jesus has already conquered death change your perspective on that challenge?

Prayer
Lord, thank You that no struggle I face is greater than Your victory over death. These five words carry incredible weight. Jesus didn't rise from the dead because people hoped hard enough or because circumstances aligned perfectly. He rose because He said He would, and His word carries absolute authority... even over death itself. In a world where promises are often broken and words feel cheap, Jesus' word stands unshakeable. When He speaks, creation responds. When He commands, even death must obey. This isn't just about His resurrection; it's about every promise He's made to you. Think about the promises Jesus has given us: He will never leave us nor forsake us. He works all things together for good for those who love Him. He has prepared a place for us. These aren't wishful thinking or empty religious platitudes... they're backed by the same authority that conquered the grave. When you're struggling to believe God's promises in your life, remember the empty tomb. The same Jesus who said He would rise from the dead and did exactly that is the same Jesus making promises to you today. His track record is perfect, and His word has never failed.

Bible Verse
As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside privately and told them what was going to happen to him. “Listen,” he said, “we’re going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. They will sentence him to die. Then they will hand him over to the Romans to be mocked, flogged with a whip, and crucified. But on the third day he will be raised from the dead.” - Matthew 20:17-19

Reflection Question
Which of God's promises do you find hardest to believe right now, and how does Jesus' perfect track record encourage you to trust Him?

Quote
Jesus didn't rise because his disciples believed hard enough. This is exactly what happened to the women who went to Jesus' tomb. They came with spices to anoint a dead body, but instead encountered an angel announcing the most incredible news in human history: "He is not here; He is risen!" Sometimes our expectations limit what we believe God can do. These women expected to find death, but God had something infinitely greater in mind. Their mourning was transformed into joy, their despair into hope, their ending into a new beginning. God often works beyond our expectations. When we're facing situations that seem hopeless... broken relationships, financial struggles, health challenges... we might expect the worst. But God specializes in resurrection moments, where He brings life from death and hope from despair. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to transform your circumstances today. What are you expecting from God right now? Are you limiting Him to your understanding, or are you open to the possibility that He might do something far greater than you can imagine?

Bible Verse
Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. Many people search for meaning in relationships, careers, achievements, or experiences, yet still feel empty inside. Jesus offers something radically different when He declares that He is the resurrection and the life. He's not just pointing to a future hope... He's revealing that He is the very source of authentic life right now. Life without Jesus is like trying to run a car without an engine. It might look good on the outside, but it lacks the power to take you where you need to go. When we know Jesus personally, we discover what we were truly created for. This isn't about religious activity or moral improvement; it's about a relationship with the One who designed life itself. The beautiful truth is that this life is available to you today, regardless of your past or present circumstances. Jesus doesn't wait for you to get your life together first. He meets you exactly where you are and offers you the fullness of life that your heart has been longing for.

Bible Verse
Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Jonathan emphasizes that Jesus is the 'Name above all names' because He alone has defeated death through His resurrection. Using Matthew 28:1-10, the message highlights how the women at the tomb discovered Jesus had risen just as He promised, transforming their fear into joy. The sermon explains that Jesus' resurrection isn't just a historical event but a personal promise of victory over death for all who believe. Jonathan concludes with a clear gospel presentation from Romans 10:9-10, inviting listeners to declare Jesus as Lord and believe in His resurrection for salvation.

Intro Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts, recognizing that we gather in the presence of the One whose name is above all names - Jesus. Thank You for Your great love for each of us and for the victory You won through Christ's resurrection. As we study Your Word together today, we ask that You open our hearts and minds to receive what You want to teach us. Help us to be receptive to Your Spirit's leading and to grow deeper in our understanding of what it means that Jesus conquered death for us. Prepare our hearts for meaningful discussion and fellowship. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Ice Breaker

What is one thing that brings you joy when you think about it or experience it? It could be a person, place, activity, or memory that consistently lifts your spirits.

Key Verses

- John 11:25
- Matthew 28:1-10
- Matthew 20:17-19
- 1 Corinthians 15:20-23
- Romans 10:9-10

Questions

- Jonathan mentioned that when someone is deeply in love, it shows in how they act and see the world. How does knowing Jesus and His love change the way we experience daily life?
- The women at the tomb expected to find a dead body but instead encountered the living God. How do our expectations sometimes limit what we believe God can do in our circumstances?
- Jesus told His disciples exactly what would happen to Him, and it occurred just as He said. How does this demonstrate the power and authority of Jesus' words in our lives today?
- The angel told the women 'Don't be afraid' and Jesus later said the same thing. What fears in your life need to be surrendered to the reality of Jesus' victory over death?
- Jesus referred to His disciples as 'brothers,' showing how His resurrection makes us family. What does it mean to you personally that Jesus calls you family?
- The women experienced both fear and great joy simultaneously when they encountered the risen Jesus. How can we maintain both reverent awe and joyful celebration in our relationship with Christ?
- Jonathan emphasized that the resurrection changes how we face current struggles, not just our eternal future. How can the reality of Jesus' victory over death impact how you handle present challenges?
- The women were told to 'go quickly and tell' others about Jesus' resurrection. What holds us back from sharing the good news of Jesus with others, and how can we overcome those barriers?

Life Application

This week, identify one area of your life where you've been living in fear or defeat rather than in the victory that Jesus has already won. Each day, remind yourself that Jesus has conquered death and therefore has authority over whatever you're facing. Practice declaring 'Jesus is Lord' over that specific situation and ask Him to help you live in the reality of His resurrection power rather than in fear or discouragement.

Key Takeaways

- Jesus is the Name above all names because He alone has conquered death through His resurrection
- The resurrection of Jesus is both a historical fact and a personal promise of victory over death for all believers
- Jesus' resurrection changes how we live today, not just our eternal destiny… we can face struggles with hope knowing He has already won
- Salvation comes through declaring Jesus as Lord and believing in His resurrection, not through our own efforts or worthiness
- The good news of Jesus' victory over death is meant to be shared with others who are still living in fear and searching for hope

Ending Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for conquering death and making a way for us to have eternal life with You. As we leave this time together, help us to live each day in the reality of Your resurrection power. When we face difficulties, remind us that You have already won the victory. Give us boldness to share the hope we have in You with others who need to hear this good news. Help us to walk as people who truly believe that Your name is above all names and that nothing is impossible for You. Transform our hearts and lives to reflect the joy and hope that comes from knowing You are alive and working in our lives. In Your precious and powerful name we pray, Amen.

Is it fear of punishment, desire for blessing, or something deeper? The apostle Paul discovered that the most powerful motivation for transformation is the overwhelming love of Christ. When we truly grasp that Jesus died for us... for our failures, our shame, our rebellion... it changes everything. This love isn't based on our performance or potential; it's based on His character and choice. He loved you when you were actively rejecting Him. He died for you when you didn't deserve it. This kind of love is so transformative that we can't help but live differently. Not because we have to, but because we want to. When love becomes our motivation, obedience flows naturally from a grateful heart rather than grudging obligation. Today, let the reality of Christ's love for you sink deep into your soul and watch how it transforms your desire to follow Him.

Bible Verse
My old self has been crucified with Christ. This isn't just a nice metaphor; it's a spiritual reality that changes everything about how we live. The power that sin once had over us has been broken. We're no longer slaves to destructive patterns, addictions, or shame from our past. Instead, we can consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God. This doesn't mean we'll never struggle with temptation, but it means we have real power to say no to what's wrong and yes to what's right. Living this truth requires daily surrender... choosing to walk in the freedom Jesus purchased for us rather than returning to old chains. The massive curtain that separated people from God's holy presence was torn in two from top to bottom... not by human hands, but by God Himself. For centuries, only the high priest could enter God's presence once a year, but Jesus' sacrifice changed everything. His death didn't just pay for our sins; it opened direct access to God for every believer. No longer do we need to approach God through intermediaries or feel distant from Him because of our failures. Jesus became our great High Priest, making a way for us to know God personally and intimately. This means you can talk to God anytime, anywhere, about anything. His presence is available to you right now, not because you've earned it, but because Jesus made it possible through His sacrifice.

Bible Verse
At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. But at the cross, Jesus revealed a completely different kind of power... the power to sacrifice for others. While crowds mocked Him and demanded He save Himself, Jesus chose to stay on the cross. He could have called legions of angels or destroyed His enemies, but His true identity as Messiah wasn't found in avoiding suffering. Instead, it was revealed through His willingness to endure it for our sake. This challenges everything we think we know about strength and leadership. The name above all names wasn't earned through conquest but through sacrifice. When we face difficult situations, we can remember that true power isn't about getting our own way or protecting ourselves at all costs. True power is found in laying down our lives for others, just as Jesus did for us.

Bible Verse
...he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. This isn't meant to discourage us, but to help us recognize our desperate need for a Savior. Jonathan explores how Jesus willingly gave His life to pay the debt of sin that humanity could never pay, breaking the barrier between us and God when the temple curtain was torn. The message emphasizes that through Christ's sacrifice, believers have been crucified with Christ and raised to new life, no longer slaves to sin but alive to God. The sermon challenges listeners to live in the reality of this transformation, motivated not by fear or obligation, but by the overwhelming love of Jesus who died for them.

Intro Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts, ready to encounter Your truth through Your Word. As we gather together, we ask that You open our minds and soften our hearts to receive what You desire to speak to us today. Help us to truly understand the significance of Jesus' sacrifice and what it means for our lives. We pray that You would use this time to draw us closer to You and to one another. Give us ears to hear Your invitation and the faith to respond. Holy Spirit, guide our discussion and help us apply Your truth to our daily lives. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Ice Breaker

What is one name (could be a person, place, or brand) that immediately brings a strong memory or feeling to mind when you hear it?

Key Verses

- 1 John 2:2
- Matthew 27:27-56
- Philippians 2:5-11
- Romans 6:6-11
- Galatians 2:20

Questions

- Jonathan described sin as an impossible debt we could never pay. How does understanding sin this way change your perspective on what Jesus did for you on the cross?
- Jesus didn’t display His power through dominance, through force, or by destroying His enemies… but by laying down his life for those who don’t deserve it. What does this paradox teach us about how God's power is displayed differently than worldly power?
- The women stayed with Jesus at the cross when everyone else fled, and they became the first witnesses of His resurrection. How does their faithfulness encourage you in times when following Jesus feels costly?
- When the temple curtain was torn from top to bottom, it symbolized direct access to God. How should this reality impact your prayer life and relationship with God?
- Paul says we have been 'crucified with Christ' (past tense). What does it mean practically to 'consider yourself dead to sin and alive to God'?
- Jonathan mentioned that being dead to sin isn't easy while living in our fleshly bodies. How can we walk in the freedom Christ gave us while still struggling with sin?
- What motivates Paul to live his transformed life according to Galatians 2:20? How can remembering Jesus' love for you motivate your daily choices?
- The sermon emphasized that salvation involves both belief and surrender. What areas of your life might God be calling you to surrender more fully to Him?

Life Application

This week, when you face temptation or struggle with sin, pause and remember that Jesus loved you enough to die for you. Instead of trying to overcome sin in your own strength, remind yourself that you have been crucified with Christ and that He lives in you. Choose to live from the reality of your new identity rather than your old patterns. Consider starting each day by declaring: 'I am dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.'

Key Takeaways

- Jesus paid the impossible debt of sin that we could never pay ourselves, serving as the perfect sacrifice that atones for our sins.
- The paradox of the cross shows that true power is demonstrated through sacrifice and love, not dominance or force.
- When Jesus died, the temple curtain was torn, giving us direct access to God and breaking the barrier that sin had created.
- As believers, we have been crucified with Christ and raised to new life… this is a present reality, not just a future hope.
- Walking in freedom from sin is motivated by love and gratitude for what Jesus did, not by fear or obligation.

Ending Prayer

Father, thank You for the incredible love You demonstrated through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. We are overwhelmed by the reality that You were willing to die for us because You didn't want heaven without us. Help us to live each day in the truth that we have been crucified with Christ and that it is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us. When we struggle with sin, remind us of Your great love and the freedom You purchased for us. Give us the strength to choose daily to die to ourselves and live for You. May our lives be a reflection of the transformation You have worked in our hearts. In Jesus' precious and holy name we pray, Amen.

Not the version of you that you think you should be, not the person you're trying to become, but you... right here, right now, with all your flaws and failures. This means you're free to stop performing, free to stop pretending, free to stop trying to prove yourself. The world tells us we need to earn our place, climb the ladder, and impress others to have value. But Jesus' humble arrival on a donkey declares something revolutionary: your worth isn't based on your performance. When we truly understand that the King of the universe chose humility to reach us, it transforms how we live. We no longer need to exhaust ourselves trying to earn love or acceptance. We can rest in the truth that we're already loved beyond measure. This freedom allows us to serve others without ulterior motives, to love without expecting anything in return, and to live authentically without fear of judgment. The path to true honor runs through humility. When we humble ourselves before God, acknowledging our need for Him, He lifts us up to places we could never reach on our own. Today, choose to receive the humble King and let His humility transform your heart.

Bible Verse
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. - James 4:10

Reflection Question
What would change in your life if you truly believed you could stop performing and just be loved as you are?

Quote
You're free to stop performing. A manger in Bethlehem, a towel washing dirty feet, a wooden cross on a hill... these don't look like glory to our human eyes, yet they represent the most powerful moments in history. Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey reminds us that divine glory often wears the clothes of humility. We live in a culture that equates success with visibility, power with position, and worth with wealth. But Jesus shows us that true greatness looks different in God's kingdom. The King of kings chose to be born in a stable, work as a carpenter, and ride a donkey. He demonstrated that real leadership serves others rather than demanding service. When we embrace humility, we're not diminishing ourselves... we're aligning with the very character of God. Humility isn't thinking less of yourself; it's thinking of yourself less. It's recognizing that your worth doesn't come from what others think of you, but from what God thinks of you. And He thinks you're worth dying for. Today, look for God's glory in the humble moments, the quiet acts of service, the gentle responses to difficult people. That's where His kingdom is most clearly seen.

Bible Verse
The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. These weren't the religious elite or political leaders... they were ordinary folks who would never normally be allowed in a king's presence. Yet here they were, offering their humble possessions as a red carpet for the King of kings. What's beautiful about this moment is that Jesus received their worship knowing their hearts were fragile. Some of these same people would be shouting 'Crucify Him!' just days later. But Jesus didn't reject their praise because it was imperfect or temporary. He accepted their worship in that moment, knowing full well their limitations. This gives us incredible hope. You don't have to be perfect to worship Jesus. You don't need to have it all figured out or be spiritually mature. Your ordinary life, your simple offerings, your imperfect heart... they're all welcome in His presence. God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Your everyday acts of faith, your simple prayers, your small acts of kindness... they all matter to Him. You may feel like you have nothing special to offer, but Jesus sees the heart behind the gift.

Bible Verse
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! What would you expect? A magnificent war horse, gleaming armor, a parade of soldiers? Instead, Jesus chose a donkey... the most humble of animals. This wasn't a mistake or a lack of resources. It was a deliberate choice that revealed the heart of God's kingdom. In our world, we're taught to climb the ladder, grab power, and reach the top no matter who we step on. We choose the war horse mentality; aggressive, dominating, impressive. But Jesus shows us a different way. The donkey represents peace, servanthood, and humility. It's not about being weak; it's about being strong enough to choose gentleness. Every day, we face this choice: will we choose the donkey or the war horse? Will we lead with humility or pride? Will we serve others or demand to be served? The path Jesus took wasn't just for that moment in Jerusalem... it's the pattern for how His followers should live. True strength is found in choosing the donkey when the world expects a war horse.

Bible Verse
The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered. “Who is this?” they asked. And the crowds replied, “It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” - Matthew 21:10-11

Reflection Question
In what areas of your life are you choosing the 'war horse' approach when God is calling you to choose the 'donkey' path of humility?

Quote
Would you choose the donkey or would you choose the war horse?

Prayer
Jesus, give me the courage to choose humility over pride and service over self-promotion. From social media profiles to first impressions, we constantly evaluate people and situations based on what we see on the surface. But what if our expectations are completely wrong? The Jewish leaders had clear expectations about their coming Messiah. They had studied the scriptures, knew the prophecies, yet when Jesus arrived, they missed Him entirely. Why? Because His appearance didn't match their expectations. Sometimes God's greatest works come in the most unexpected packages. A baby in a manger, a carpenter from Nazareth, a King on a donkey... none of these fit our human understanding of power and glory. Today, we might be missing God's work in our lives simply because it doesn't look like what we expected. Perhaps that difficult season is actually God preparing you for something greater. Maybe that humble opportunity is your pathway to purpose. When we judge by appearances alone, we risk missing the very thing God is doing right in front of us.

Bible Verse
Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Jonathan examines how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecy by choosing to ride on a donkey rather than a war horse, demonstrating that God's kingdom operates on principles opposite to worldly expectations. The message emphasizes that the Jewish leaders missed recognizing Jesus as the Messiah because His humble appearance didn't match their expectations of a conquering king. Through examining Zechariah 9:9, Matthew 21:1-11, and Psalm 118, the sermon reveals how the crowds' cries of "Hosanna" were prophetic declarations recognizing Jesus as the cornerstone, the sacrifice, and the Savior.

The sermon challenges believers to follow Jesus' example of humility, contrasting worldly pursuits of power and recognition with God's call to humble service. Drawing from James 4:10, Jonathan explains that true honor comes not from self-promotion but from humbling ourselves before God, allowing Him to lift us up. The message concludes with practical applications for living humbly: surrendering to God's lordship, serving others without seeking credit, and being honest about our struggles and failures. This humility isn't weakness but the pathway to experiencing God's grace and participating in His upside-down kingdom of the servant King, Jesus.

Intro Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You this morning with grateful hearts, recognizing that You are the King of kings and Lord of lords. As we gather together to study Your Word, we ask that You would open our hearts and minds to receive what You want to teach us today. Help us to set aside our own agendas and expectations, and instead be receptive to Your truth. Lord, just as the crowds had their own ideas about what the Messiah should look like, we sometimes have our own preconceived notions about how You should work in our lives. Give us humble hearts that are willing to be surprised by Your ways. Holy Spirit, guide our discussion and help us to encourage one another as we explore what it means to follow Jesus' example of humility. May this time together draw us closer to You and to each other. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Ice Breaker

If you could choose any mode of transportation to make a grand entrance somewhere important, what would you choose and why? (Examples: helicopter, limousine, horse-drawn carriage, motorcycle, etc.)

Key Verses

- Zechariah 9:9
- Matthew 21:1-11
- Psalm 118:22-28
- James 4:10
- Acts 4:8-12

Questions

- Why do you think the Jewish leaders missed recognizing Jesus as the Messiah when He fulfilled the prophecy so clearly? What does this teach us about our own expectations of how God should work?
- Jesus chose to ride on a donkey instead of a war horse. What does this choice reveal about the nature of His kingdom compared to earthly kingdoms?
- The crowds shouted 'Hosanna' (save us) while laying down their garments and palm branches. How does their spontaneous worship challenge us in our own worship practices?
- Jonathan mentioned that some of the same people shouting 'Hosanna' would later shout 'Crucify Him.' What does this reveal about the human heart, and how can we guard against fickleness in our faith?
- The sermon explained that Psalm 118 prophetically describes Jesus as 'the stone the builders rejected' who became 'the cornerstone.' How does this metaphor apply to areas of your life where you might be rejecting what God is trying to build?
- James 4:10 says 'Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will lift you up in honor.' This seems counterintuitive to worldly thinking. Share an example of when you've seen this principle work in real life.
- Jonathan gave three practical ways to follow Jesus' example of humility: humble yourself before God, toward others, and in your struggles. Which of these three areas is most challenging for you personally?
- Jesus 'enters into our everyday life to redeem it' rather than remaining distant. How have you experienced Jesus meeting you in ordinary, everyday moments?

Life Application

This week, choose one specific area where you've been trying to promote yourself or demand recognition. Instead of self-promotion, practice humility by serving in that area without seeking credit or acknowledgment. This could be at work, in your family, at church, or in your community. Keep a journal of how God works through your humble service and watch for ways He might 'lift you up in honor' as you surrender your need to elevate yourself.

Key Takeaways

- Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecy by entering Jerusalem humbly on a donkey, revealing that God's kingdom operates on principles opposite to worldly expectations of power and glory.
- The crowds' cries of 'Hosanna' were prophetic declarations from Psalm 118, recognizing Jesus as the rejected cornerstone who became the foundation of salvation.
- True humility is not weakness but voluntary surrender to God, trusting His ways over our own understanding and expectations.
- God's greatest acts often come in plain and unexpected forms - a manger, a towel, a donkey, a wooden cross - showing that glory is often dressed in humility.
- Following Jesus' example means humbling ourselves before God, serving others without seeking credit, and being honest about our struggles and failures, trusting that God will lift us up in His timing.

Ending Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for being our humble King who chose the way of the servant, rather than the way of worldly power. As we leave this time together, help us to carry the truth of Your humility into our daily lives. When we're tempted to promote ourselves or demand recognition, remind us of Your example riding on that donkey. Give us the courage to choose the path of humility, trusting that You will lift us up in Your perfect timing. Help us to see opportunities this week to serve others without seeking credit, to surrender our pride before You, and to be honest about our struggles. May our lives reflect the upside-down values of Your kingdom, where the last are first and the humble are exalted. Transform our hearts to be more like Yours, and use our humble service to draw others to You. We love You, Lord, and we thank You for Your amazing love for us. In Your precious and holy name, Jesus, we pray. Amen.

When God calls you to step out in faith, to share His love, or to take risks for His kingdom, He doesn't send you empty-handed. He goes with you, empowering you through His Holy Spirit. This promise transforms everything about how you approach your calling as a disciple-maker. You don't have to rely on your own wisdom, strength, or eloquence. The same God who worked through imperfect disciples like Peter, who turned a simple fisherman into a bold preacher, wants to work through you. As you walk step by step with Jesus, He not only shapes you into a mature disciple but also molds you into someone who can help others discover Him. This isn't about having all the right words or perfect theology... it's about being faithful to obey when He prompts you to reach out to someone. When you're faithful to follow His leading, you'll witness firsthand the power of God moving with you. You'll see conversations open up unexpectedly, hearts soften in surprising ways, and opportunities arise that only God could orchestrate. The world around you is lost in darkness, but Christ shining through you is a flicker of light that can illuminate His love in someone's life. Trust that as you go, God goes with you, accomplishing His will through His faithful ambassador... you.

Bible Verse
Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:18-20

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. - Acts 1:8

Reflection Question
Where is God calling you to step out in faith, trusting that He will move with you and empower you for His purposes?

Quote
God moves with us. While some are called to distant places, most of us are called to shine right where we are. God has strategically placed you in your specific neighborhood, workplace, school, and family circle for a divine purpose. Jesus called you the light of the world; not a light that's hidden under a basket, but one that's placed on a hill for everyone to see. The light you carry isn't your own; it's Christ's light shining through you, bringing clarity, hope, and direction to those around you. Look around your daily environment. Your coworkers who seem stressed and overwhelmed need the peace of Christ. Your neighbors dealing with family struggles need the hope of the Gospel. Your friends searching for meaning need to see authentic faith lived out. Being on mission doesn't require crossing an ocean; it requires understanding that wherever God has placed you is your mission field. A good place to start changing your world is right where you are. Your simple acts of kindness, your genuine care for others, and your willingness to share your faith story can illuminate the darkness around you. When you live authentically with Jesus, Jesus shining through your good works naturally produce light that points people back to Him.

Bible Verse
“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. - Matthew 5:14-16

Reflection Question
What specific opportunities do you have right where you are to let Christ's light shine through your words and actions?

Quote
A good place to start changing your world is right where you are.

Prayer
Jesus, help me recognize that You've placed me exactly where I am for a purpose. As a Christian, you hold an even more significant role; you're an ambassador of Christ, representing the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth. This isn't just a nice metaphor; it's your actual identity and calling. God has entrusted you with the ministry of reconciliation, the incredible message that broken relationships between humanity and God can be restored through Jesus Christ. Think about what this means for your daily interactions. When you show kindness to a difficult coworker, you're representing Christ's love. When you offer forgiveness instead of holding grudges, you're demonstrating God's grace. When you speak words of hope to someone who's discouraged, you're sharing the heart of the Gospel. The beautiful truth is that God chooses to work through imperfect people like you and me. Despite our flaws and failures, He partners with us to accomplish His will in the world. This should both humble and encourage you... you don't have to be perfect to be used by God. Every conversation, every act of service, every moment of compassion is an opportunity to represent Christ well. The world is watching, and through your life, they can catch a glimpse of God's character and love.

Bible Verse
And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. Suddenly, you discover the key that unlocks the door. Would you keep it to yourself? Of course not! You'd shout it out so everyone could find freedom. This perfectly captures your role as a believer. You possess the ultimate answer to humanity's deepest questions; the Gospel of Jesus Christ. While the world searches desperately for meaning, hope, and purpose, you hold the key that unlocks eternal life and peace with God. Yet sometimes we act as if this incredible news is meant to be kept private. We worry about being too bold or fear rejection. But consider this: people around you are genuinely lost, struggling with anxiety, broken relationships, and purposelessness. They need what you have. Your coworkers, neighbors, and family members are searching for the very hope that lives within you. They cannot call upon the Lord unless they believe, and they cannot believe unless someone tells them. That someone could be you. You don't need to be a theologian or have all the answers. You simply need to share what Jesus has done in your life. Your authentic testimony, combined with God's love, can be the key that unlocks someone's heart to receive Christ.

Bible Verse
For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”- Romans 10:13-15

Reflection Question
Who in your life is searching for hope and meaning, and how might God be calling you to share the answer you've found in Jesus?

Quote
Just like the person in the escape room who finds the answer to unlock the door, they will shout out the answer so that everyone hears, because they have the answer to find the way out. In the same way, God has given every believer access to the answer the world needs. You have the answer to find the way out.

Prayer
Father, open my eyes to see the people around me who need Your hope. Give me boldness to share Your good news and wisdom to know how to communicate Your love effectively.
