Step By Step [Taking Steps To Freedom] Devotions Day 4
Breaking the Pull of the Past
Devotional
Even after crossing the Red Sea, the Israelites struggled with the pull of Egypt. Though physically free, they often longed for the familiarity of bondage, complaining, "We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost... also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic" (Numbers 11:5). They conveniently forgot the whips, the crushing labor, and the oppression. This reveals a profound truth about freedom: leaving physical bondage is often easier than breaking emotional and mental ties to our past. We might physically remove ourselves from harmful situations while still carrying the mindsets, fears, and habits formed in captivity. God's drowning of Pharaoh's army in the Red Sea wasn't just about protecting Israel... it was about decisively cutting their ties to Egypt. God knew that as long as the option to return remained, true freedom would be elusive. In your journey, God isn't just interested in delivering you from obvious bondage; He wants to break the pull of the past completely. This might mean changing relationships, environments, or habits that keep you connected to what God has called you to leave behind. Today, consider what "armies from Egypt" might still be pursuing you... old thought patterns, relationships, or comforts that tempt you back toward bondage. God wants to drown these pursuers so you can move forward unhindered.
Bible Verse
When all the Israelites had reached the other side, the Lord said to Moses, “Raise your hand over the sea again. Then the waters will rush back and cover the Egyptians and their chariots and charioteers.” So as the sun began to rise, Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the water rushed back into its usual place. The Egyptians tried to escape, but the Lord swept them into the sea. - Exodus 14:26-27
Reflection Question
What aspects of your past bondage still have an emotional pull on you? What would it look like to allow God to completely sever those ties?
Quote
"He didn't just bring Israel through the Red Sea, he drowned the Egyptians who were trying to go against them and bring them back to bondage."
Prayer
Father, thank You for not just bringing me out of bondage but for wanting to break its power over my life completely. Show me where I'm still emotionally tied to my past, and give me courage to let You sever those connections. I choose today to look forward, not backward. Help me to stop glamorizing what You've delivered me from and to embrace fully the freedom You're leading me into. Amen.
