Deeper Still [God's Presence] Devotions Day 3

Choosing Presence Over Performance

Devotional
In a world that celebrates productivity and achievement, it's easy to believe that our worth comes from what we do rather than who we are. This mindset can creep into our relationship with God, making us feel like we need to earn His love through our service and good works. The story of Martha and Mary beautifully illustrates this struggle. Martha was busy preparing, serving, and making sure everything was perfect for Jesus' visit. Her intentions were good... she wanted to honor Jesus through her hospitality. But in her busyness, she missed the very thing she was working so hard to achieve: meaningful time with Jesus. Mary, on the other hand, chose to sit at Jesus' feet and simply be with Him. She wasn't doing anything productive by the world's standards, but she was doing the most important thing possible... she was present with Jesus. When Martha complained about Mary's apparent laziness, Jesus gently redirected her focus. He didn't scold Martha, but He highlighted what truly mattered: presence over performance, being over doing. This doesn't mean service and good works are unimportant. Rather, it means they flow best from a heart that has spent time in God's presence. When we prioritize being with God, our doing becomes more effective, more joyful, and more aligned with His will. Today, resist the urge to impress God with your busyness. Instead, choose to sit at His feet like Mary did.

Bible Verse
But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” - Luke 10:41-42

Reflection Question
In what ways might you be like Martha, so focused on doing things for God that you're missing out on simply being with Him?

Quote
Jesus doesn't scold Martha. Instead, he draws her attention to the importance of presence over performance.

Prayer
Jesus, help me choose what is better. When I'm tempted to impress You with my busyness, remind me that You simply want my presence. Teach me to sit at Your feet and find rest in Your love. Amen.
