God Makes All Things New [A New Season] Devotions Day 3

New Wine Needs New Wineskins

Devotional
Have you ever tried to pour something new into something old that couldn't handle it? Jesus used this exact illustration to explain why His new covenant couldn't be contained within old religious structures. New wine expands as it ferments, and old wineskins become brittle and inflexible, unable to stretch with the growth. This isn't about God rejecting the old for the sake of being different. The old covenant served its purpose perfectly, it revealed our need for a Savior and pointed us toward Christ. But it was never designed to contain the transformative power of the gospel. That required something entirely new. The same principle applies to our personal spiritual journey. Sometimes God needs to create new structures in our lives to accommodate His fresh work. Old mindsets, rigid thinking patterns, or inflexible approaches to faith might need to be replaced with something that can expand and grow with what God is doing. Think about areas in your life where you might be trying to force new experiences with God into old frameworks. Maybe you're attempting to understand His current work through past disappointments, or you're trying to contain His limitless love within the boundaries of your previous religious experience. God wants to give you new wineskins... fresh perspectives, renewed thinking, and flexible faith that can handle the expanding work He's doing in your life. This isn't about throwing away everything from your past, but about being open to new containers that can hold the fullness of what He wants to pour into your life. The new wine of God's transformative power is ready to be poured. Are you ready for the new wineskins?

Bible Verse
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins.” - Mark 2:22

Reflection Question
What old mindsets or rigid approaches to faith might be preventing you from fully receiving the new things God wants to do in your life?

Quote
The old way served a purpose, but it cannot bring about a deeper relationship that God desired with his people.

Prayer
Father, help me identify areas where I'm trying to contain Your new work in old, inflexible thinking. Give me new wineskins... fresh perspectives and renewed mindsets that can expand with Your transformative power. Make me flexible and open to the new ways You want to work in my life. Amen.
