More Than Enough [God's Word] Devotions Day 1
Even Giants of Faith Have Doubts
Devotional
Have you ever wondered if the heroes of faith in the Bible ever struggled with uncertainty? The answer might surprise you. Elijah, one of the most powerful prophets in Scripture, experienced profound doubt even after witnessing God's incredible power. Picture this: Elijah had just called down fire from heaven, defeating 850 false prophets in an epic showdown on Mount Carmel. God had proven Himself to be the living God who answers by fire. Yet shortly after this incredible victory, when Queen Jezebel threatened his life, Elijah fled in fear and despair. This teaches us something profound about the nature of doubt. Even after experiencing God's miraculous power firsthand, doubt can still creep in when circumstances become threatening or overwhelming. Elijah's story reminds us that doubt is part of the human experience, not a disqualification from God's love or calling. What's beautiful about Elijah's story is how God responded to his doubt and fear. God didn't rebuke him or abandon him. Instead, He provided food, rest, and gentle reassurance. God met Elijah exactly where he was... exhausted, afraid, and questioning. This reveals God's heart toward us when we struggle with uncertainty. He doesn't expect us to have perfect faith all the time. He knows we're human, and He meets us with patience and grace in our moments of doubt.
Bible Verse
Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there. Then he went on alone into the wilderness, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.” - 1 Kings 19:3-4
Reflection Question
When you think about your own spiritual journey, can you identify a time when doubt crept in even after experiencing God's faithfulness, and how might knowing that even Elijah struggled with this change your perspective on your own doubts?
Quote
After God proved himself to be the living God who answers by fire... After Elijah stood alone against 850 prophets of the false gods of Baal and Asherah... after God sustained Elijah with food and water to make the long journey to Mount Sinai, where he was now meeting with God... After all of that, Elijah still had doubts.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for showing us through Elijah's story that doubt doesn't disqualify us from Your love. Help me to be honest about my struggles and uncertainties, knowing that You meet me with grace and patience exactly where I am. Amen.
