The Flame That Forms Us [Purifying] Devotions Day 2

Identifying Impurities

Devotional
As we go through the refinement process, impurities in our hearts are revealed. Just as a gold refiner identifies dark spots in the gold, God uses trials to show us areas in our lives that need healing and purification. These impurities can be sins, unhealthy patterns, or anything that hinders our relationship with God. It's important to recognize that suffering is not always a result of sin. The story of Job teaches us that human suffering is complex and often part of God's refining work. We may not understand everything, but we can trust that God is in control and has a purpose for our trials. "When gold is first mined, it is subjected to the refiner's fire to measure the level of its purity. When dark spots appear, the gold refiner knows that the gold isn't pure. The impurities get removed through the heat of the fire."

Bible Verse
But he knows where I am going. And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold. For I have stayed on God’s paths; I have followed his ways and not turned aside. I have not departed from his commands, but have treasured his words more than daily food. - Job 23:10-12

Reflection Question
What impurities has God revealed in your heart through recent trials?

Quote
Sin does have consequences and undoubtedly brings suffering. But as the Book of Job demonstrates, suffering is not necessarily the result of one's sin. Human suffering is more complex than a simple equation of individual behavior and consequence.

Prayer
Lord, help me to see the impurities in my heart and give me the strength to surrender them to You. Purify me and make me more like You. Amen.
