Following Jesus [Become] Devotions Day 4

Loved Into Imitation

Devotional
There is a big difference between doing something out of obligation and doing something out of love. Obligation is exhausting. Love is energizing. And when it comes to following Jesus, the motivation matters more than most people realize. Ephesians 5:1-2 calls us to imitate God as His dear, or dearly loved children. That word, dearly loved, carries the weight of agape: chosen, fierce, unconditional, and sacrificial. You are not following Jesus to earn something. You are following Him because He has already given you everything. You do not imitate someone you are afraid of. You imitate someone who has captivated and captured your heart. When you truly understand how deeply God loves you, obedience stops feeling like a burden and starts feeling like a response. A natural, grateful, joyful response to a love that held nothing back. If following Jesus has started to feel like a checklist, come back to this. You are dearly loved. Not because of what you have done, but because of who He is. Let that love be the reason for everything.

Bible Verse
'Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are His dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.' - Ephesians 5:1-2

Reflection Question
When you think about following Jesus, does it feel more like obligation or a response to love, and what do you think is driving that feeling?

Quote
"You don't imitate someone because you are afraid. You imitate someone because you are captivated by them, because you've been transformed by Their love."

Prayer
Father, let Your love be the reason I follow You, not guilt, not fear, but gratitude for everything You have already done. Amen.
