Bold Faith [Blind Faith] Devotions Day 3
The Cost of Following
Devotional
When Bartimaeus received his sight, he made an immediate decision: he followed Jesus down the road. He didn't go home to show his family his healed eyes. He didn't return to his old begging spot with new capabilities. He recognized that the One who had given him physical sight was worth following with his whole life. This stands in stark contrast to another man in Mark's gospel—the rich young ruler. When faced with Jesus' invitation to follow, he walked away sad because he had great wealth he couldn't let go. Both men encountered Jesus, but their responses revealed what they truly valued. Following Jesus isn't about adding Him to our existing life plan. It's about surrendering our entire life plan to Him. There's a profound difference between accepting Jesus as our Savior (the one who rescues us) and submitting to Him as our Lord (the one who directs us). The path of discipleship isn't always comfortable. In fact, Jesus never promised comfort—He promised purpose. He didn't die to make our lives easy; He died to make our lives meaningful and effective for His kingdom. When we truly see Jesus for who He is, the only logical response is to follow Him down whatever road He's taking, regardless of the cost. Because anything we give up pales in comparison to the treasure of knowing and serving Him.
Bible Verse
At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. - Mark 10:17-22
Reflection Question
What possessions, comforts, or life plans might be holding you back from fully following Jesus as both Savior and Lord?
Quote
There's a difference between allowing Jesus to be your savior and allowing Jesus to be your Lord. Salvation is free, but discipleship will cost you your life.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I've wanted Your blessings without Your lordship. Help me to see clearly, like Bartimaeus, that You are worth following at any cost. Give me courage to let go of whatever holds me back from complete surrender to You. Amen.
