Following Jesus [Build] Devotions Day 3

Get Low and Show Up

Devotional
The night before everything fell apart, Jesus did something no one expected. He got on His knees and washed His disciples' feet. He knew what was coming. He knew the weight of the cross. And still, He got low. That image is one of the clearest pictures of what discipleship actually looks like. It is not about having all the answers or leading from a place of authority. It is about being willing to show up, get close, and serve someone in the ordinary, unglamorous moments of their life. Real discipleship happens in proximity. It happens over coffee, in a phone call at the wrong hour, in a hard conversation you did not plan to have. You cannot walk alongside someone from a distance. You have to actually be there. And here is the thing: when you choose to invest in someone else's growth, you are not elevating yourself. You are doing the opposite. You are saying that their journey matters more than your comfort or your reputation. That is exactly what Jesus modeled. He did not come to be served. He came to serve, and He asked us to do the same. Who in your life needs someone to show up for them right now? You do not have to have it all together to take that step. You just have to be willing to get low.

Bible Verse
'After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, "Do you understand what I was doing? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, because that is what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you."' - John 13:12-15

Reflection Question
Is there someone in your life you have been meaning to invest in, but you have been waiting until you feel more ready or more qualified?

Quote
You can't wash someone's feet from a distance. You have to be there. This might mean a weekly coffee with someone you're discipling. A phone call when they're struggling.

Prayer
Lord, give me the humility to get low and show up for the people You have placed in my life. Help me to serve the way You served, without needing recognition or reward. Amen.
