Strangers In This Land [Trust God's Timing] Devotions Day 1

The God Who Sees

Devotional
Have you ever felt invisible? Perhaps in a crowded room, during a difficult season, or even in your prayers? In Genesis 16, we meet Hagar—a woman who knew this feeling intimately. Cast out into the wilderness, pregnant and alone, she encountered something unexpected: God Himself. In her darkest moment, Hagar discovered she wasn't invisible at all. She was seen completely by the Creator of the universe. This revelation was so profound that Hagar gave God a special name: El Roi, "the God who sees me." This name doesn't appear anywhere else in Scripture—it's unique to Hagar's encounter. What comfort this brings! The God of the universe doesn't just see the "important" people or the "righteous" ones. He sees the outcast, the forgotten, the one who feels abandoned. When we're waiting on God's promises, feeling overlooked or forgotten, we can remember this truth. God sees us in our lowest moments. He notices our tears, hears our prayers, and knows our struggles. Nothing in our lives escapes His loving gaze. Today, whatever wilderness you find yourself in, remember you are not alone. You are seen. The God who found Hagar finds you too. Your circumstances may not change immediately, but knowing El Roi watches over you can change everything about how you wait.

Bible Verse
Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.” She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?” - Genesis 16:13

Reflection Question
In what area of your life do you most need to remember that God sees you right now? How might this awareness change your perspective on your current circumstances?

Quote
Just like Hagar. In your lowest moments, God sees you. God sees your pain. He hears your cries. We are never alone because we serve a God who sees us.

Prayer
El Roi, thank You for seeing me completely. When I feel invisible or forgotten, remind me that Your eyes are always upon me. Help me to find comfort in Your presence, even in my wilderness moments. Give me the strength to wait on Your promises, knowing that You see every detail of my life. Amen.
