More Than Just Water Into Wine - Devotions Day 1
When Joy Runs Dry
Devotional
Picture this: you're at the celebration of a lifetime, surrounded by family and friends, when suddenly the joy runs out. That's exactly what happened at the wedding in Cana. In Jewish culture, weddings weren't quick afternoon affairs... they were week-long celebrations that included the entire village. Running out of wine wasn't just embarrassing; it was devastating. It broke the sacred laws of hospitality and would bring lasting shame to the newlyweds. But here's what strikes me most: wine represented joy itself in Jewish tradition. When the wine ran out, it meant the couple had no joy left to offer their guests. How often do we find ourselves in similar situations? Life's pressures, disappointments, and challenges can drain our joy until we feel we have nothing left to offer others. Maybe you're there right now... feeling like your joy has run dry. Perhaps you're facing financial stress, relationship struggles, health concerns, or simply the weight of daily responsibilities. You might feel like you're supposed to be celebrating life, but instead, you're running on empty. The beautiful truth is that Jesus sees when our joy runs low. He notices when we're struggling to keep up appearances while feeling empty inside. Just as He cared about a young couple's embarrassment at their wedding, He cares about the moments when you feel like you have nothing left to give. Your empty moments matter to Him, and they're often the very places where He chooses to work His greatest miracles.
Bible Verse
The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.” - John 2:1-3
Reflection Question
What areas of your life feel 'empty' right now, and how might God want to use those very places for something beautiful?
Quote
Running out of wine was more than embarrassing. It broke the unwritten laws of hospitality. And the bride and groom would be considered shameful.
Prayer
Lord, I bring You the empty places in my life... the areas where my joy has run dry and I feel like I have nothing left to offer. Help me trust that You see my need and care about even the smallest details of my life. Prepare my heart for the transformation You want to bring. Amen.
