Famous Last Words [Jesus Understands Our Grief] Devotions Day 2

The Darkest Hour

Devotional
In our darkest moments, when pain seems unbearable, we might wonder if God has abandoned us. Jesus experienced this very feeling on the cross. But Jesus also understood that human feelings and the truth of God's Word don't always line up with each other. In that moment of ultimate sacrifice, He cried out in anguish. This wasn't just physical pain - it was the spiritual agony of bearing the world's sin. Yet through this darkest hour, Jesus demonstrated the depth of His love for us.

Bible Verse
At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?" - Matthew 27:45-46

Reflection Question
When have you felt most distant from God, and how does Jesus' experience on the cross speak to those moments?

Quote
At that moment, Jesus felt both the crushing weight of sin and the agony of excruciating death that His body was going through.

Prayer
Father, in my moments of darkness, help me remember Jesus' sacrifice. Thank You that You never abandon Your children, even when circumstances feel overwhelming. Give me strength to trust You in my darkest hours. Amen.
