God Makes All Things New [A New Identity] Devotions Day 3
Spring Cleaning for the Soul
Devotional
Have you ever noticed how new buds on a red oak tree in spring gradually push off the old, dead leaves? This beautiful picture illustrates what happens in our spiritual lives. Transformation isn't always instant... sometimes it's a process where new life gradually pushes out the old. Living as a new creation requires active participation on your part. It's not enough to simply know you're new; you must actively throw off old sinful patterns and behaviors. This isn't passive... it's an intentional, daily choice to reject your former lifestyle and embrace who you are in Christ. Just like spring cleaning your house, you need to identify what belongs to your old life and deliberately remove it. Maybe it's toxic relationships, harmful habits, or negative thought patterns. The beautiful truth is that as you make room for new life, God's Spirit works within you to push out the old. This process requires both your effort and God's power working together. You're not trying to change yourself through willpower alone... you're cooperating with the Holy Spirit who is already at work within you.
Bible Verse
throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. - Ephesians 4:22-24
Reflection Question
What specific old patterns, relationships, or habits do you need to actively 'throw off' to make room for the new life God wants to grow in you?
Quote
This act of throwing off your old sinful nature and your former way of life is not passive. It is an active choice that we make daily to reject our former lifestyles.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, show me what needs to be removed from my life so that new growth can flourish. Give me the courage and strength to actively throw off old patterns and embrace the new life You're creating in me. Help me to cooperate with Your transforming work. Amen.
