Cornerstone [The Foundation Of God's Living Temple] Devotions Day 4

What You Build Actually Matters

Devotional
Not everything we contribute to a community lasts. Paul makes this uncomfortably clear in 1 Corinthians 3. Some of what we build into the lives of others and into the church is like gold, silver, and precious jewels. It is lasting, it is honoring to God, and it strengthens the people around us. Other things are like wood, hay, and straw. They may look fine in the moment, but they have no real substance. The difference often comes down to the small, unseen things. The way you listen to someone who is struggling. The way you serve without needing recognition. The way you choose to forgive instead of holding a grudge. These are not just personal decisions. They are structural. They either reinforce the integrity of God’s temple or they create fractures in it. This is not meant to create pressure. It is meant to create purpose. Every act of genuine love, every moment of patient service, every choice to show up with compassion, it all counts. You are laying something that will last. You have a specific place in what God is building. You are not ornamental. You are load-bearing.

Bible Verse
"For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ." - 1 Corinthians 3:11

Reflection Question
When you think about how you have shown up for others recently, are you laying gold or straw, and what is one specific thing you could change?

Quote
"When you sit with someone who is struggling and you listen with Christ’s compassion, you’re laying gold. When you serve in a way that nobody notices, but you do it because you know what matters. You’re laying gold. When you forgive someone who hurt you, when you could hold a grudge, you are laying gold."

Prayer
Jesus, You are the foundation of everything. Help me to build on that foundation with intention and love, knowing that what I contribute to Your people truly matters. Amen.
