Truly Knowing Jesus [Ears To Hear] Devotions Day 4

Recognizing Voices That Are Not His

Devotional
Not every voice calling for your attention is worth following. Some voices tell you that your worth is tied to what you achieve or how you look. Some sound urgent and almost reasonable, quietly stealing your peace and your sense of purpose. Some seem trustworthy until things get hard, and then they disappear. Jesus names these voices directly in John 10. The stranger, the thief, the hired hand. None of them are leading you toward life. And here is the key: you can only recognize a false voice if you already know the real one. One helpful filter is to ask a few honest questions about the voice you are hearing. Does it ask you to sacrifice yourself, or does it ask you to sacrifice others? Does it cost the speaker something, or is it only costing you? Does it call you toward greater love, honesty, and generosity, or does it push you toward self-protection and defensiveness? The voice of Jesus will always align with His character. Any voice that contradicts who He is, no matter how convincing it sounds, is not His voice. This is why knowing Scripture matters so much. It gives you a clear picture of His character so that counterfeits become easier to spot. You do not have to be afraid of being deceived. The more time you spend with the real thing, the more confident you become. Trust the Shepherd. He is not trying to confuse you. He is calling you clearly.

Bible Verse
"The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life." - John 10:10

Reflection Question
What voices in your life right now are competing with Jesus for your attention, and how do they hold up against the character of who He is?

Quote
Does this voice ask me to sacrifice myself, or does it ask me to sacrifice others? Does this voice cost the speaker something, or is it just costing me? Does this voice demand that I become more loving, more honest, more generous, or does it demand that I become more defended?

Prayer
Jesus, help me to clearly recognize the voices that are not Yours and give me the wisdom to turn away from them. Keep my heart anchored to Your truth. Amen.
