Bonfire [Sanctified Worship] Devotions Day 3

You Cannot Negotiate With an Idol

Devotional
Once you have named an idol, the temptation is to manage it. To set limits around it. To keep it at a safe distance while still holding on. But Scripture does not give us that option. The language the Bible uses around idolatry is urgent and physical. Paul tells us to flee from it, using a word that describes running from danger. Not walking away calmly. Running. Deuteronomy tells Israel to burn the idols completely, leaving nothing behind. These are not instructions for gradual reduction. They are calls to decisive action. Why so extreme? Because an idol kept close is an idol you will eventually return to. Partial surrender is not really surrender at all. This might feel overwhelming, but here is the good news: you are not doing this alone. God is not standing at a distance, waiting to see if you can pull it off. He is with you in the process, and His grace is bigger than your struggle. The goal is not perfection. The goal is direction. Turn fully toward Him, and trust that He will meet you there. Every step away from the idol is a step toward the life He has for you.

Bible Verse
'So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols.' - 1 Corinthians 10:14

'Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.' - 1 John 5:21

Reflection Question
Is there an area of your life where you have been trying to manage or reduce an idol rather than fully surrendering it to God?

Quote
"You cannot negotiate with idolatry. You cannot reduce it, you cannot manage it. You have to run."

Prayer
Jesus, I do not want to just manage what is pulling me away from You. Give me the courage and the strength to run toward You completely, trusting that You are better than anything I am leaving behind. Amen.
