More Than Just Water Into Wine - Devotions Day 2
The Art of Prayerful Suggestion
Devotional
Mary had a problem, but she didn't demand a solution. When she approached Jesus about the wine shortage, she simply said, "They have no more wine." She presented the need without telling Jesus exactly what to do about it. This is what we might call the art of prayerful suggestion... bringing our concerns to God while trusting His wisdom to respond in the best way. As parents, many of you have mastered this art. You know how to present a situation to your family without being demanding, allowing others to step up and take ownership. Mary demonstrated this same wisdom in her relationship with Jesus. She trusted Him enough to simply present the problem and let Him decide how to respond. This teaches us something profound about prayer. Too often, we come to God with detailed plans, telling Him exactly how we think He should solve our problems. We pray with specific timelines, particular methods, and predetermined outcomes in mind. But Mary shows us a different way... one that requires greater faith and deeper trust. When we practice prayerful suggestion, we acknowledge that God sees the bigger picture. We admit that His ways are higher than our ways and His timing is perfect. We present our needs, concerns, and desires to Him, but we hold them with open hands, trusting that His response... whether yes, no, or wait... is exactly what we need. This kind of prayer requires humility. It means releasing control and trusting that the God who loves us perfectly will respond in the way that's best for us and brings Him the most glory.
Bible Verse
Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” - John 2:4
Reflection Question
How can you shift from demanding specific solutions in prayer to practicing the art of prayerful suggestion, trusting God's wisdom and timing?
Prayer
Father, teach me to bring my needs to You with open hands and a trusting heart. Help me resist the urge to dictate solutions and instead rest in Your perfect wisdom and timing. Give me the faith to present my concerns and then trust You completely with the outcome. Amen.
