Cornerstone [A Stumbling Stone] Devotions Day 1
When Good Things Get in the Way
Devotional
It is surprisingly easy to drift. You start reading your Bible, showing up to church, and doing all the right things, and somewhere along the way, those good habits quietly shift from being a pathway to Jesus into being a performance for Him. You are still doing everything right on the outside, but something feels hollow on the inside. Israel experienced this exact drift. They had every spiritual advantage imaginable, yet they missed what others, who were not even looking, somehow found. It was not a lack of effort. Their effort had actually become the problem. They were working so hard to achieve something that was already being offered to them freely. This is not just an ancient story. It is a mirror. Many of us have been there, checking boxes, saying the right words, showing up in the right places, all while our actual connection with Jesus quietly fades into the background. Here is the encouragement: recognizing the drift is not a reason for shame. It is an invitation. Jesus is not standing at a distance waiting for you to perform well enough to reach Him. He is close, and He is calling you back into something real, something personal, and something far better than a checklist could ever offer.
Bible Verse
"What does all this mean? Even though the Gentiles were not trying to follow God’s standards, they were made right with God. And it was by faith that this took place. But the people of Israel, who tried so hard to get right with God by keeping the law, never succeeded." - Romans 9:30-31
Reflection Question
Where in your faith life have good habits started to feel more like obligations than genuine connection with Jesus?
Quote
"Reading your Bible and being involved in community with your church family are very important things. As a matter of fact, they're absolutely necessary. But checking off that you read a verse or chapter or checking off that you went to church, that's not the goal. They're not substitutes for relationship with Jesus. They are things that help you grow deeper in your relationship with Jesus."
Prayer
Lord, show me where I have replaced relationship with routine. Draw me back into something real with You today. Amen.
