Inside Out [A Righteous Character] Devotions Day 1
Who You Are Matters More Than What You Do
Devotional
We live in a world obsessed with performance... what we accomplish, how we appear, what we post online. But Jesus flips this script entirely. When He begins the Sermon on the Mount, He doesn't start with a to-do list or rules to follow. Instead, He paints a picture of who we become when God transforms us from the inside out. The Beatitudes aren't commands to check off; they're a portrait of what happens when the Holy Spirit does His work in our hearts. Jesus shows us that transformation begins with our identity, not our activity. When we understand who we are in Christ... beloved, forgiven, set apart... our actions naturally flow from that reality. This is liberating news! You don't have to fake it or perform righteousness for an audience. God is more interested in changing your heart than polishing your image. When your identity is secure in Him, authentic transformation becomes possible.
Bible Verse
'Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.' - Ephesians 4:21-24
Reflection Question
What areas of your life are you trying to change through willpower alone, rather than allowing God to transform your heart first?
Quote
Jesus doesn't start by telling us what to do. He starts by telling us who to be. And that changes everything.
Prayer
Lord, help me focus on who You're calling me to be rather than just what I should do. Transform my heart so that my actions flow naturally from Your love.
