Inside Out [A Righteous Choice] Devotions Day 2

You Can't Fake the Fruit

Devotional
Have you ever tried to tape apples onto a thorn bush? It sounds ridiculous, but that's essentially what we do when we try to manufacture righteousness through behavior alone. Jesus uses this powerful metaphor to show us that authentic transformation must come from within. A healthy tree naturally produces good fruit; it doesn't strain or struggle to do so. Similarly, when our hearts are truly transformed by Jesus, righteous living flows naturally from that inner change. We don't have to force ourselves to be good; goodness becomes part of who we are. The problem comes when we focus only on external behavior while ignoring the condition of our hearts. We might succeed in looking righteous on the outside for a while, but eventually, our true nature will show. Just like you can't make a thorn bush produce grapes, you can't create lasting righteousness through willpower alone. This is incredibly freeing! It means we don't have to exhaust ourselves trying to be perfect. Instead, we can focus on our relationship with Jesus and allow His Spirit to transform us from the inside out. The fruit will come naturally as we grow in Him.

Bible Verse
'A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can't produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can't produce good fruit.' - Matthew 7:17-18

Reflection Question
Are you trying to produce good fruit through your own effort, or are you allowing Jesus to transform your heart first?

Quote
You can't fake fruit. A thorn bush, Jesus says, will never produce grapes, no matter how much you wish it would.

Prayer
Jesus, transform my heart so that good fruit flows naturally from my life. Help me stop trying to manufacture righteousness on my own.
